Copying specific ground background parts

As you create a line of ground tiles, you may have noticed that the game randomly creates background decorations. For instance, in the New Super Mario Bros. U Overworld set, as you put down ground, you'll see flowers and bushes pop up. If you want control over this, all you have to do is hold ZL/ZR to go into copy mode, and select the tile with the specific decoration that you want. If you want to select multiple tiles, hold L/R for Multi-Grab Mode, and select the tiles you want. This may be necessary to copy certain decorations, such as the bushes in the NSMBU Overworld theme. As long as there are not ground tiles interfering with the top part, what you copy will show up, decoration included. With this kind of control you can create levels that are not only enjoyable to play, but visually appealing as well.

This might be more obvious, but you can also use the resizable platforms with surfaces that you can jump through (the option between the spikes and Hammer Bro in the toolset) for background variety. You can place that surface first and place blocks on the surface part, or place what you want first. Either way, what you place over it will take priority, basically hiding the initial surface. So, for example, you could place one of these platforms in the NSMBU underground tileset to give it a unique gemstone look. Then, you can place ground tiles over the surface to act as a ceiling and ground below, and you end up with a fancy tunnel. These techniques might help your level seem more unique and stand out, so it could be worth experimenting with.

It's worth noting that although it doesn't look like it at first, you can also use copy mode to copy airship portholes and move them into place. Even if you copy a porthole and place it in a position in which it won't become a porthole at first (say by itself with no ground tiles around it), as soon as you draw ground around it, it will become a porthole again.
